Thomas Joseph DeCarlo
Hyde Park, NY
Thomas Joseph DeCarlo passed peacefully at his home in Hyde Park, NY, on June 28, 2023, surrounded by family. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 22, 1941, the son of USNR Lt. Thomas James DeCarlo and Elizabeth DeCarlo. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1959, earning the rank of Hospital Corpsman 3rd class. The Navy is where he would meet his eternal love, Gail Ann Baker, who was also serving her country. They married on April 29, 1962. Following their discharge, they returned to the family in Poughkeepsie and then Hyde Park where they would spend the next 61 years together.
Tom worked at AT&T for 31 years until his retirement in 1995. His pursuits, loves and loyalties were clear and unwavering; his wife, children, grandchildren, beloved terrier Holly, his home, the U.S. Navy, and his country, which he proudly honored with the American flag. As his illness progressed, the home which he had painstakingly maintained rewarded him with comfort, security, and peace. Along with his wife, it was a refuge and oasis.
Tom is survived by his wife, Gail A. DeCarlo; son, Thomas James DeCarlo and his partner, Cheryl Przetak; daughter, Darlene (DeCarlo) Gross and her husband, Thomas Gross; grandson, Alexander Gross; granddaughter, Elizabeth Gross; two sisters-in-law, Florence Baker and Patricia DeCarlo; nieces, Jacqueline (DeCarlo) Murphy, Christine (DeCarlo) DeCejka and Linda (Baker) Leonardo; nephews, John DeCarlo, Jeffrey Baker, James Baker, and Robert Baker III; two great nephews, John Jr., Declan, and one great niece, Mackenzie.
In addition to his parents, Tom was predeceased by his brother, Detective John DeCarlo, Brooklyn, NY, and brother-in-law, Robert Baker Jr., Poughkeepsie, NY.
The family wishes to thank friends for their compassion and support, the staff of Hudson Valley Hospice, with heartfelt gratitude to Angela and Ingrid.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at 9:45 am at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel - St. Peter's Church, 185 Hudson View Drive, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Interment will follow at the family plot at St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY.
