Obituary

Sabra S. Gilbert, 86, of Red Hook and a former longtime resident of Hyde Park, died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. Born March 31, 1935, in Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of C. Foster and Barbara M. Bauer Sutton.   A graduate of Poughkeepsie High School, she attended Vassar College and graduated from the University at New Paltz with a bachelor's degree in teaching. On August 3, 1958, she married her first husband, James Joseph Jones. He predeceased her on October 24, 1976.  On September 22, 1979, she married her second husband, Robert S. Gilbert Sr. He predeceased her on March 21, 2006. Sabra began her career as a teacher in the City of Poughkeepsie School District. Along with her first husband, who was also a teacher, they ran summer travel youth programs with the YMCA in Poughkeepsie. That is where they found their love for travel. Eventually, they began their own summer tour program for students, called Sa-Jim Educational Tours. In 1963, they opened their own travel agency, Jones Travel Agency, in Hyde Park. While her husband remained teaching, Sabra ran the travel agency over a span of 38 years. She had many agents come and go, but most became part of her family. She loved to travel and share her adventures with her clients. She strove to provide them the best experience possible. If it wasn't for the internet, she wouldn't have retired in 2001. She loved travel and helping her clients. She also loved to cook, and believed in living in an organic, holistic way. She maintained her health with supplements and vitamins and never took any prescription medications! Sabra was a member of the Hyde Park Historical Society and the International Lilac Society. Along with her second husband, Rob Gilbert, she helped maintain a lilac garden near Cooperstown called "Pie in the Sky." After Rob passed away, Sabra and her longtime friend, Bill Blanco, of Cooperstown, maintained the garden. The garden has 150 different varieties of lilacs, and people come from all over to see them.   Survivors include her daughter, Kimberly S. Baxter of Hyde Park; grandson, Randolph L. Duncan and longtime companion, Nicole Harris, of Rhinebeck; great-grandson, Rhys L. Duncan, of Rhinebeck; cousin,  Barbara Ann Lavoie; and second cousin, Christopher Lavoie. Sabra is also survived by her stepchildren, Robert S. Gilbert Jr., Charles B. Gilbert (Marianne), Edwina Mary Belding (Jeff); and four step-grandchildren, Molly and Amy Gilbert, and Joanna and Valerie Belding. Nieces and nephews (on the gilbert side) include Elizabeth (Pam) Allers, Natalie Gilbert, Julia Craner, Gretchen Gilbert, and William and James Gilbert.   Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 PM, on Tuesday, July 27th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park. In keeping with her wishes, cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. Sabra's family respectfully requests memorial donations to Dutchess County SPCA 636 Violet Ave. Hyde Park, NY 12538 ( www.dspca.org ) To send an online condolence, for directions, or to join the calling hours virtually, please visit www.sweetsfuneralhome.com .
