Obituary

Sabino "Sammy" Joseph Pagano U.S. Army Ret. 90, of Hyde Park, N.Y., formerly of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., Port Chester, N.Y. and New Rochelle, N.Y., passed away on Monday, December 6, 2021. Born on October 11, 1931, in the Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Carlo and Ida (Delvecchio) Pagano. In January 1949, at the age of 17, Sabino proudly served in the United States Army and went to serve our county in the Korean war until he was wounded twice in battle and honorably discharged in 1952. Earning the Purple Heart along with many other metals and awards, his experience during this time in his life was rarely, if ever talked about but the leg brace that he had to put on everyday was evidence that he had been though something most of us could never understand. On April 27, 1952, after returning home, Sabino married the former Philomena Pandoli. They lived in New Rochelle and then Port Chester until 1961 when they moved to Pleasant Valley. Despite his injury, Sabino was an excellent provider for his 4 children, considering himself the 'best wallpaper hanger', he worked for the Painters Union until his retirement. Then he went on to work various other jobs, owning his own pizzeria, Sabinos' Pizza in Stanfordville for a number- of years and including, but not limited to, 'managing' the bar at Easy Street, where everybody knew his name! He stood out in a crowd and whether you liked him or not, you noticed! Sammy marched to the beat of his own drum, truly authentic and loud, his presence was unique and undeniable! For that, he will be missed. Although they divorced after 44 years of marriage, Sabino and Phyllis remained friends to the end. She survives at her home in Hyde Park. Together having four children, he was predeceased by his two youngest, Steven Pagano of Hyde Park and Paula Jappen of Hyde Park, and siblings Carlo and Karrie. Survived by his oldest children, Gary and wife Terrie Pagano of Hyde Park and Susan and husband DelTravis of Newburgh, one sister Gloria Severit of and best friend Alfred Shaffer. Sabino was a grandfather to ten, great-grandfather to sixteen, a great, great grandfather to three, several nieces and nephews and last, but definitely not least, he was a friend to many. Calling hours will be Monday December 13th from 4pm to 7pm at Sweets Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park, N.Y. 12538.  Cremation will take place at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery on Tuesday.
