Obituary

Richard "Dick" Meyerson, 88, formerly of both Poughkeepsie, NY and Wilmington, NC, passed away on April 11, 2023.

Dick was born on July 27, 1934, to Joe and Selma Meyerson. After Dick graduated from Poughkeepsie High School, he studied Mathematics and Recreational Leadership at SUNY New Paltz and then NYU.

He met the love of his life, Helen Tirelli at Poughkeepsie High School, where she didn't notice him. Luckily, she changed her mind, and they were married over 60 years. They raised four children in a lively, musical, and adventurous spirit. He is survived by his wife, Helen Meyerson, his children - David (Kathy) Meyerson of Poughkeepsie, NY, Daniel (Jean) Meyerson of Poughkeepsie, NY, Katie (Ken) Mathews of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, and Jennifer (Steven) Tower of Medfield, MA, grandchildren: Mark (Ashley) Meyerson, Thomas Meyerson, Sophia Mathews, Alexander Mathews, Sonya Tower and Cora Tower, and his two great-grandchildren - Maxwell and Evelyn Meyerson. He is also survived by his sister, Ralda Lee of Berkeley, CA, and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Daniel Meyerson of Palo Alto, CA.

Dick was a beloved Director at the YMCA in Poughkeepsie, where he began several programs for children and their fathers. He was the Director of the YMCA Day Camp for 25 years. At the Y Camp, he led campers in a daily morning meeting, complete with motivational and silly stories and lots of songs, accompanied by his accordion playing. Accordion playing aside, Dick was an amazing composer and pianist, and he was always ready to perform or lead a sing along.

A master chess player, Dick worked for a short time for the National Chess Federation before joining the sales team at New York Life. After he retired, Dick and Helen "escaped" their family and retired to Wilmington, NC, where they met wonderful friends and enjoyed the beach, cultural offerings, warm weather, and traveling the world.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.

Visitation will be held from 10 AM to 12 Noon, Saturday April 15th at Sweet's Funeral Home, 4365 Albany Post Rd., Hyde Park. A Celebration of Dick's life will take place at 11:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (https://tinyurl.com/5cnzyksk) or the Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Ave., Hyde Park, NY 12538. (www.dcspca.com)

Dick was a known humorist, and groans can still be heard across the East Coast in reaction to his jokes. We can hear him now: "Treat each day as your last, one day you will be right."
