Obituary

A Life Remembered  Patricia Ann Colbert passed away at The Pines at Poughkeepsie Center on Saturday, June 19, 2021. She was 76 years old.  Patricia Ann (Pat) was born on September 8, 1944 in Poughkeepsie, New York to Elizabeth Rose Haas Conrad and Richard Francis Conrad. She was the oldest of three children having two sisters, Mary Jeanne and Susan Margaret. Pat graduated from Holy Trinity Catholic School in 1958 and from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1961. Because her Father died when she was 12 years old, she and her sisters were raised by their Mother. From an early age they were given responsibilities to help with household  chores. The family was also raised with close extended family values on both their maternal and paternal sides knowing well their cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents.   Pat wanted to become a nurse when she grew up. Before she was able to drive, she applied and was trained to become a Candy Striper at Saint Francis Hospital working as a volunteer as often as she was able. She loved it and knew it was the career for her. Once she became 16, she was able to work as a Nurse's Aide, a job which gave her an even grandeur taste of nursing. Her next step was to earn her RN so she completed that by attending and graduating from Saint Claire's Hospital School of Nursing in New York City in 1966.  It was following her marriage that she passed her state boards and worked as a nurse RN at Saint Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie.  Pat met and married John Patrick Colbert in July of 1966 and they became the parents to two children, John Richard in 1968 and Michele Lynn in 1970. Pat only worked in private duty nursing as she raised her children. Their home was in Lagrange out in the country, so she enjoyed their activities in sports and the arts. Michele really enjoyed theater and the arts. Tragedy struck when Johnny died in his 16th year. Pat began a life on her own. Happiness returned when Michele married Joel Krantz and two granddaughters were added to the family in Natalie and Samantha. Just the thought of them brought a smile to her face.  Pat continued her interest in nursing, but it expanded to mental health. Through the years she worked for People and Newberry Mental Health. She was a case worker and peer mentor and led her groups in helping discussions. At this time, she did a lot of traveling to different  locations and even spoke on mental health in several forums.  She proudly spoke of her peer groups. She enjoyed helping others and understood their feelings.  For fun Pat did enjoy all the family time of which she was a part. With her parents and grandparents there were vacations in York Beach, Maine and Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire and trips every other weekend to Amsterdam, New York to visit with her father's family. There were family shows in which all the cousins performed at the grandparents' home with the performance of Peter Pan being the most memorable. Pat, of course, was Peter. She was the oldest cousin on her Mother's side after all. She enjoyed traveling and went on a cruise with her Mother and sister.   She went to the beaches of North Carolina with both Mary and Sue and their families. Aunt Pat was dearly loved by all her nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Holidays were spent with extended family.  A great deal of Pat's life was dedicated to her church, Faith Assembly.  It was there she was known as "The Mayor" for she greeted and knew everyone. To the children she was known as "Nana Pat" and she was a volunteer in the children's ministry there. She also assisted in the Samuel Prayer Group at the church. She loved talking and people and was known for her hardy belly laugh. Her music of choice was Christian music.  Pat is survived by her daughter, Michele, and her husband, Joel Krantz, of California; her two granddaughters, Natalie and Samantha; two sisters; one aunt, Shirley Storey of Maine; six nieces; two nephews; thirteen great nieces; eight great nephews; ten cousins; and other extended family and many friends.  The family wishes to thank the staff of the Pines at Poughkeepsie Center, most especially Jessica and Jeanne, for their dedication and untiring love and care through the years that Pat was a resident there. Their priority was always her well-being. We also thank the Hospice staff who assisted in her comfort during the final days of her life.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pat's name to Care Net, PO Box 2118, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 (www.carenetpregnancycenter.com) or the Hudson Valley Hospice Foundation, 80 Washington St., Suite 204, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 (www.hvhospice.org) due to her respect and dignity for all life from conception to natural death.  A period of visitation will be from 9 to 11 AM, Friday, June 25th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park. Funeral services will follow at 11 AM at the Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the family plot at Calvary Cemetery, Poughkeepsie. To send an online condolence or for directions, please visit www.sweetsfuneralhome.com .
