Obituary for Stephen E. Turner

Stephen E. Turner, 84, a resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie for over forty years, died Sunday morning, July 1, 2018.

Born in Mineola, Long Island on October 9, 1933. He was the son of Harold E. and Anna L. Coyne Turner.

A graduate of Mckinley High School in Canton, Ohio and a 1956 graduate of Ohio State University where he obtained a BS degree in electrical engineering.

During the Korean War, he was stationed in Germany where he served with the United States Army 302nd Engineering Battalion.

Having concluded his service in the Army, Stephen started his career working at General Cable Corporation in New York City. Being a Chief Engineer, he was involved with the design, development and the installation of laminar-insulated high voltage underground transmission cable systems. During his time with General Cable Corp., the company was purchased by and became part of Pirelli Cable where he worked until 1979. At this time, Stephen joined Underground Systems Inc. where he earned the position of Vice-President. During his employment he was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and past Chairman of ICC Working Group that developed submarine power cable design and construction standard. In 2012, he retired to join his family in assisting with the family business.

He married Katherine L. Doebel, his wife of 59 years, on June 28, 1959 at the United Methodist Church in Clyde Ohio. During his marriage they started their family in Mount Kisco, NY. At the start of 1977, he and Katherine moved with their family from Mount Kisco to Poughkeepsie to establish a family flower shop, Flower Barn 261 Violet Ave. in Poughkeepsie

Stephen was a former member of the Mt. Kisco United Methodist Church, where he served as Treasurer. Having moved to Poughkeepsie he became a member of the United Methodist Church of Hyde Park.

He was of a very mechanical and intellectual mindset allowing him to be able to fix almost anything. His hobbies and past times included amateur ham radio, building of model airplanes, sailing, playing tennis, scuba diving, which he also was an instructor and lastly skiing, both on snow and water.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Katherine, who still resides at home. He also leaves a legacy of two children, his daughter, Barbara M. Turner-Jones and husband, Allen of Milan; son Robert E. Turner and wife Catherine, of Hyde Park; along with three grandchildren, Amber Dye and husband Michael of Queens; Jasmine Turner of Poughkeepsie and Forrest Turner of Hyde Park. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Laurange of Valatie and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Patricia Wiltsie.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.

Memorial calling hours will be from 5 to 7 pm, Friday, July 6th at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

A celebration of his life will take place at 6:30 pm during the visitation. Lt. Robert Ridley will officiate.
