Obituary for James W. Monks, Sr.

James W. Monks Sr., 86, of Hyde Park, New York, died on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at The Eleanor Nursing Facility at Hyde Park, NY.

      Born in Fall River, MA, he was the son of James W. and Jane V. McManus Monks. He married Maureen Nicholson on August 21, 1954, at St. John the Evangelist, White Plains, NY. Maureen survives at home.

      James graduated from Poughkeepsie High School, Westchester Community College with an A.A.S. and later earned his B.S. in organic chemistry from Michigan State University. James owned and operated Berncolors Poughkeepsie, Inc., a chemical dye company, from 1959 to 1980. He later owned and operated Monks TV Repair and Sales, Hyde Park, NY, from 1980 to 1997 when he retired.
      He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956 achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He later remained in the NAVY reserves from 1957-1982.

      James was an active volunteer of the community. He served on the Social Security Advisory Board for Dutchess County, Vice President and Director Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, Vice President Hyde Park Swim and Tennis Club, Hyde Park Town Board 3rd Ward 2009-2011, Hyde Park Meals on Wheels where he was a driver and Board member, Hyde Park American Legion Post Commander, Dutchess County American Legion - Commander, Vice Commander & Chaplain, the Regina Coeli School Board, AARP Driver Safety Instructor and served on Senator Saland's West Point Appointment Committee.

      Professional memberships included the American Chemical Society, Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturing Association, American Association of Textile Colorist, Mid-Hudson Industrial Association, Director, Council of Industry for Southern, NY.

      In 2007, James and Maureen were the Dutchess County Office for the Aging Volunteer Senior Citizen couple of the year.

      There wasn't a dog he didn't love and there wasn't a dog that didn't love him.

      He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maureen Monks, Hyde Park, NY, daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Thomas Manton; daughter and son-law, Melinda & Frank Piper; daughter and son-in-law, Meg & Alan Wittenberg; daughter, Marlene Monks; son and daughter-in-law, Jim & wife Karen Monks; daughter and son-in-law, Marybeth & Bill Giesler; two sisters, Eleanor Andrews and Jane Friedman and two step siblings Margaret Tucciarone and John Monks; grandchildren, TJ & Cortland Manton; Heather Piper Witruk, Sarah Piper Smith, Hayley & Shelby Piper; Breen Wittenberg; Katie & Tess Monks; Aubrey & Marisa Giesler; great grandchildren, Carter & Logan Witruk; and Paige & Matthew Smith. In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by a brother, Joe Monks.

      Calling hours will be Monday, April 30, 2018, from 4pm to 7pm at Sweet’s Funeral Home, 4365 Albany Post Rd., Hyde Park, NY 12538. The American Legion will conduct services at 6pm during the calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at Regina Coeli Church, Route 9, Hyde Park, NY. Military honors will immediately follow at the church. In keeping with his wishes cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers his family requests donations may be made to Hyde Park Meals on Wheels, Dutchess-Ulster American Heart Association or the Dutchess County SPCA.
