Obituary for Joan I. (Sweeting) Syler

Joan I. (Sweeting) Syler, 75, a lifelong area resident, died on Sunday, February 11, 2018, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

Born on May 11, 1942 in Rahway, NJ, Joan was the daughter of the late Harold and Vera Elizabeth (DuPilka) Sweeting. She graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1960.

Joan managed the computer store at Marist College until her retirement.

She had many hobbies, including arts and crafts, photography (she took several courses in photography), and cooking and baking (which everyone loved, especially when she made pies). Joan also enjoyed reading, occasionally taking cruises, and she loved all types of music and enjoyed attending concerts.

Joan was very family-oriented and her family meant the world to her. She thoroughly enjoyed all family gatherings, of which there were many. Joan also enjoyed spending time with friends, often meeting them for lunch, movies, and playing cards.

Joan belonged to many clubs and organizations in her lifetime. She was the former head of the Pine Plains Garden Club, and she was instrumental in planning and organizing her high school reunions. Because she enjoyed planning so much, she was always willing to lend a hand to someone who was planning a reunion.

On April 12, 1964 at the First Presbyterian Church in Poughkeepsie, Joan married Frederick W. Syler. Mr. Syler survives at home in Poughkeepsie.

In addition to her husband, Joan is survived by her son, Eric Syler, of Poughkeepsie; son, Jeff Syler, and his companion, Meghan Burbridge, of Poughkeepsie; sister, Carol Crisci, and her husband, Angelo, of Gardiner; sister, Bette Coughlin, and her husband, Russell, of New Paltz; sister, Pat Sweeting, of New Paltz; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Calling hours will be from 3-7pm on Thursday, February 15th at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park.

A funeral service will be at 10am on Friday, February 16th at the funeral home. Rev. Arlene Dawber will be officiating.

Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Hyde Park.
