Obituary for Henry J. Rodgers, Jr.

Henry J. Rodgers Jr. passed away on October 24 in Hyde Park, NY. He went in his sleep at home, surrounded by his family and with a football game on. Rodgers was born in Latrobe, PA, the son of Henry J. Rodgers Sr. and Mary (Rosko) Rodgers. A standout football player in high school and college, he developed a lifelong love of the game and especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. He attended Wabash College in Indiana, where he received his B.A. in Mathematics and passed up the NFL to join IBM. He relocated to Poughkeepsie, where he met the love of his life, Irene Townsend. The couple were married in Wappingers Falls in 1966 and he got his M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1967. Rodgers had a 36-year career at IBM, during which he held a variety of managerial and executive positions. He was involved with the Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union for over four decades and served in a variety of capacities, including chairman. He helped oversee the organization’s transformation from a small financial cooperative to one of the largest credit unions in the United States, even receiving the National Volunteer of the Year Award from the National Association of Federal Credit Unions in 1990. He was also active in the Lion’s Club and youth sports. After retiring from IBM, Rodgers opened his own consulting firm and became an adjunct professor of economics at Marist College. He also combined his organizational and financial acumen with his love of the arts by serving on the board of the Mill Street Loft. Henry Rodgers had a passion for travel, and there are a many fond memories of cruises along the coast of Alaska and through the Panama Canal, as well as trips to Nova Scotia and Hawaii. Closer to home, he enjoyed jazz clubs, Broadway shows and Porterhouse steaks. Rodgers is survived by his wife, “Reenie,” as well as daughter Lissa Townsend Rodgers of Las Vegas, NV, son Andrew Rodgers and wife Anna Rodgers of Marshall, MI, and granddaughter Alexis. A brother Tom Rodgers and wife Lynn survive in Latrobe. Services will be held on Friday, November 3 at 10:00 a.m. in Latrobe at St. John the Evangelist.
