Obituary

Town of Poughkeepsie  Marion Luella Van Ackooy, 93, a resident of Poughkeepsie for 90+ years and previously of Marlton, NJ, died peacefully on December 31, 2021, at Hudson Valley Rehabilitation and Extended Care Facility in Highland, NY.  Born on July 9, 1928, in Poughkeepsie, Marion was the daughter of John E. Perkins and Florence C. (Rhodes) Perkins, who have predeceased her.  In addition to her parents, Marion was also predeceased by her sister, Florence (Perkins) Schoonmaker.  Marion is survived by her daughters, Louise M. Van Ackooy of Poughkeepsie, NY; Susan M. Van Ackooy of Marlton, NJ and son, John W. Van Ackooy, Jr., and wife Rebecca of Highland, NY.  She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Anna (Van Ackooy) Berger, many grandchildren, Christina L. DeSantis, Michael P. DeSantis, Nicole Shaw and husband Rick, Louis Perry and wife Brittany, and many nieces, nephews and several great grandchildren. Marion graduated from F.D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, NY.  She held many different jobs working retail at Luckey Platt & Co. and as a dental assistant for Dr. Jacob Erdreich.  After raising her family, Marion worked for the Hyde Park Central School District in cafeteria services.  She was an employee of Cup'n'Saucer, a luncheonette in Hyde Park, Crispis' Deli and Molloy's Pharmacy in Hyde Park. On August 29, 1948, in Poughkeepsie, NY, she married John W. Van Ackooy, whom Marion knew since grade school.  Her husband of sixty years predeceased her. Marion was known for her beautiful smile and kindness she offered.  She took great joy in putting the needs of others before her own.  While she had many "quiet" talents she was quick to deflect praise.  She was much more comfortable acknowledging and building up those around her.  A perfect example, while at Hudson Valley Rehab, she became known as the one in "Charge."  She knew what was going on in the lives of her close friends and was always there for them. Marion was an avid walker often found at the IBM Country Club, The Poughkeepsie Galleria, and her neighborhood.  Her biggest joy was square dancing with the Do-C-Do Square Dance Club.  Her other joy was the Tri Towne Senior Group, in Arlington where she learned how to play Rummi Kube and made some great friendships. Calling hours will be from 10am to 12pm on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.  Funeral services will begin at Noon with the Rev. Arlene Dawber, officiating.  Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Hyde Park.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284 or www.heart.org or a favorite charity.  Condolences may be made to the family at www.sweetsfuneralhome.com .
