Obituary

Mrs. Marie L. Underwood passed away peacefully on July 10, 2023. She was a lifelong Hyde Park resident and communicant at Regina Coeli Church. She was a proud graduate of Marist College, Vassar College, and SUNY New Paltz, going back to school after her children were grown. She became an early childhood special education teacher after having a daughter diagnosed with Down Syndrome. She was employed by Rehabilitation Programs in Poughkeepsie. She was a strong advocate for children with disabilities and an avid volunteer with the ARC and served on many committees in Dutchess County. Being the wife of a volunteer firefighter for 50 years, she was an active member of the Ladies Auxillary through the Hyde Park Fire Department. She was a devoted Catholic who volunteered in the Regina Coeli school where her grandson attended. With her love of Italian cooking, she enjoyed hosting weekly family dinners, and she went all out for the holidays. There was also plenty of food in her house for whoever showed up. Marie loved to travel after her retirement, venturing with her husband to Ireland, Hawaii, Italy, France, England, the Grand Canyon, Alabama, and Florida. She frequented New York City, Lake George, and Ocean City many times with family during all different seasons. She was a lifelong diehard Yankees fan and had a special fondness for Derek Jeter.

She instilled a fierce independence in her daughter and granddaughters, and she was proud of her sons' and grandsons' accomplishments in life. She loved attending all of her grandchildren's many games, shows, and events. She was really proud of all of her grandchildren.

Her husband, Kenneth L. Underwood, Sr., and brother, Louis DiUglio, predeceased her in 2010 and 2019, respectively. She was the daughter of Anna C. DiUglio. She is survived by four children: Kathleen McClain and husband Julius of Highland, Kenneth L. Underwood, Jr. and wife Jeanne of Hyde Park, Robert G. Underwood and wife Rebecca of Montgomery, Alabama, and Ann C. Underwood of LaGrangeville. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Julius R. McClain, AnneMarie McClain and husband Matt, Ian Underwood, Wilton McClain, Kady Underwood, and Andre Underwood. She is also survived by two great grandchildren: Marshie and Lily. She also has a beloved cousin Sister Jean Canora of Syracuse and beloved nieces Sharon DiUglio Glass and wife Janice, and Susan Johnson and husband Bill, as well as dear grandnieces Megan and Janelle.

The family would like to deeply thank all of those who looked after her and brought her joy, especially the staff at Unit 3B and Unit 2A at Archcare at Ferncliff Nursing Home; the team from Unlimited Care in Rhinebeck, New York; Laura Cardarelli and dog, Gia; and her neighbors, Steve, Erin, and their dogs.
