Obituary

Marguerite Collyer Spratt, 94, of Hyde Park, passed away on June 28, 2021.  Born December 30, 1926,  in Beacon, she was the daughter of the late Frank F. and Virginia Chesney Collyer.  She was a graduate of Beacon High School, SUNY Plattsburgh and SUNY New Paltz. Mrs. Spratt was a Home Economics Teacher at several schools during her career, including West Junior High School in Binghamton, Dover Plains High School, and Haviland Junior High School in Hyde Park. She retired from Orville Todd Middle School in the Spackenkill School District in the late 1970's.  Marguerite was active in many clubs and organizations over the years which included the Plattsburgh Alumni Association, the Denison Society in Mystic, CT, the Hyde Park Historical Society, the Roosevelt Vanderbilt Association, the Dutchess County Historical Society, and the Mahwenawasigh Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution (she traced her lineage back to six men who fought in the American Revolution).  She was a focal point for the Stoutenburgh-Teller Family Association, supporter of the William Stoutenburgh Homesite and the Stoutenburgh Family Cemetery.    A descendent of the famous Collyer family in Chelsea (noted for their ship building and early sloop sailing on the Hudson River), Marguerite enjoyed many happy times of sailing and ice boating on the Hudson in her younger years.  Marguerite tracked and maintained the Collyer Family History; as well as loved the history of the Hudson Valley and Hyde Park.   Marguerite enjoyed many years of down-hill skiing with her family and friends in the United States and Europe, and enjoyed reminiscing and sharing those stories. She also enjoyed gardening at home and her volunteer activities with the F. W. Vanderbilt Garden Association.   Marguerite was a communicant of St. James' Episcopal Church in Hyde Park, and was active with the church's Altar Guild.  On July 22, 1950 in the Chelsea Methodist Church, she married James Spratt. Mr. Spratt predeceased her on February 3, 2005.  She is survived by her daughter Suzanne Spratt Grater (husband Charles), of Henderson, NV;  her son Richard Collyer Spratt(wife Patricia), and two granddaughters Erica Lee Spratt and Hillary Spratt, all of San Jose, CA.  Also surviving are nephew James Collyer, of Jakarta, Indonesia; nieces, Carol Collyer, of Ithaca, NY; and Priscilla Schmidt, of Cincinnati, OH; and several grand nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law Barbara Underhill Collyer of Ithaca, NY.   In addition to her husband and parents, she was also predeceased by her brother Frank F. Collyer III, and sister-in-law, Marjorie Spratt McClain. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at St. James' Episcopal Church sometime in October, followed by burial in the family plot at St. James' Churchyard, at the convenience of the family.    In lieu of flowers, Marguerite's family respectfully requests memorial donations to the St. James' Episcopal Church Altar Guild, 4526 Albany Post Rd., Hyde Park, NY 12538, or the Frederick W. Vanderbilt Garden Assoc., PO Box 239, Hyde Park, NY 12538.
