Mardelle A. Sweet, 79, a longtime resident of Hyde Park, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. She was affectionately known as Mardi.
Born February 25, 1943, in Racine, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of Elwood W. and Anna E. Goetsch Siewert. She moved to Hyde Park as a young girl when her father was transferred to the Western Printing Plant in Poughkeepsie from Wisconsin.
Mardi was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hyde Park and former driver for Meals on Wheels of Greater Hyde Park.
Mardelle worked for many years in the transportation department of the Hyde Park Central School District working her way up from a school bus driver to a role in the office. She spent much of her working life at the "bus compound". In her retirement years, she helped her son, Rob, out in the office of their family business, Sweet's Funeral Home. She was always willing to stay late and do whatever she could to help. Her work ethic was unmatched. Trained as a beautician after graduating from Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, she did hair for many years "on the side" for her loyal clientele.
When her children were younger, she helped coach softball and was active in Hyde Park Little League. In her younger years, she could often be found on nice days riding her motorcycle or at the bowling alley.
She inherited a lifelong love for bowling from her parents and she bowled in many local leagues over the years and was a member of the NYS Women's 600 and 700 club. (She said the 600 series was easy, the 700 not so much!) She was an officer with the former Poughkeepsie Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) and when the PWBA joined with the Dutchess Putnam Counties Bowling Association to form the Hudson Valley USBC, she served as their Vice-President. While a member of the PWBA, she helped coordinate several bowling tournaments, her favorite was the Queen's Tournament. She took great pride in making that tournament a premier event. She was inducted into the PWBA Hall of Fame in 2004 for outstanding achievement, was active with the New York State USBC, and served as a delegate for the Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC). She enjoyed traveling to all the conventions and tournaments and made many "bowling friends" along the way. After her health no longer allowed her to bowl, she took pride in watching her grandson bowl for his high school team.
In recent years, she moved back to Hyde Park from The Commons at Cedar in Poughkeepsie. Mardi really enjoyed the sense of community at The Commons, and she proudly served on the board there and could often be found working around the grounds.
Anyone who knew Mardi, knew she loved a cold beer. Although she was limited as her health deteriorated, her kids snuck her a "cold one" from time to time. She loved her family and was proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also loved her dogs; too numerous to name over the years.
Survivors include her six children, Terri-Ann Sweet (Natasha Wilson), of Troy, NY, Deborah Davidson (James), of Triangle, VA, Dana Kleinhans (Jim), of Hyde Park, Deanne Sweet (John Chappell), of Prosperity, SC, and Richard Sweet, and Robert Sweet (Eileen Miller), both of Hyde Park; seven grandchildren, Bryanna, Mary-Kate, Matthew, Danielle, Blake, Heather, and James; two great-grandchildren, Kida and Leo; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her two brothers, William and Ronald Siewert; and longtime companion, Leo Clark.
The Sweet family would like to thank all of Mardi's caregivers for their compassionate care, which allowed us to keep her at home for as long as we did.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 PM, Friday, June 17th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday June 18th at the United Methodist Church of Hyde Park, Corner of Rte. 9 & Church St., Hyde Park. Rev. Kregg Gabor will officiate.
Burial will follow in Union Cemetery of Hyde Park.
