Kathleen "Cassie" F.
Mcintyre
Nov 14, 1935 — Apr 25, 2023
Poughkeepsie, NY– Kathleen (Cassie) Fidelis Tuohy McIntyre, a longtime Dutchess County resident and parishioner of Regina Coeli Church, passed away peacefully on April 25 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was 87.
Cassie was born in Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland, the daughter of Catherine and Edward Tuohy. Growing up along the Ring of Kerry, she spent her youth involved in many joyous activities, notably reciting poetry, singing Gaelic songs, Irish dancing, summer getaways to Waterville, weekends on the Tuohy family farm, Kilpatrick, and spending time with her cherished sister Mary, brother Dermot, and many friends and cousins in town. She graduated from Cahir National Secondary School where she received a Gold Fáinne indicating fluency in and a passion for the Irish language. Cassie later attended nursing school at St. Luke's General Hospital in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to the United States in 1956 to start a new life in her newfound Emerald Isle – the Hudson Valley.
On August 22, 1964, Cassie married William McIntyre at Holy Trinity Church in Poughkeepsie. They raised their family in Hyde Park where they resided for over fifty years. Cassie worked at the New York Telephone Company, IBM, and later had a twenty-year career at Vassar College. Despite health issues in her later years, Cassie especially enjoyed her beloved grandchildren and gardening.
In addition to her parents, Cassie was predeceased by her daughter Tara Patricia McIntyre; her sister Mary Tuohy Ryan and brothers Dermot and Aidan Tuohy. She is survived at home by her husband Bill; her son Father William McIntyre, OFM, of Macon, GA; her son Kevin McIntyre (Clare) of Larchmont, NY; her daughter Siobhan McIntyre Bubel (Mike) of Hyde Park, NY; her son Sean McIntyre (Megan) of Harrison, NY and her daughter Katie McIntyre (Erik) of Warwick, RI. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Br. Patrick Mary, OP, Anne, Maggie, Luke, and Nora Bubel; Cíara and Aine McIntyre and Ryan, Griffin, Declan, and Maeve McIntyre. Cassie also leaves behind her brothers-in-law Patrick McIntyre (Judy) of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Brian McIntyre (Karen) of Hudson, Florida, and several cherished nieces and nephews as well as cousins in New York, Boston, California, Florida, Texas, and Ireland.
Cassie's loyal, patient, nurturing and kind personality, coupled with her infectious laugh and soft Irish lilt, transformed the lives of everyone graced by her presence. Perhaps Irish singer-songwriter Jimmy MacCarthy best captured Cassie's departure from us when he wrote this moving tribute to Irish immigrants leaving their hometown of Kenmare ('Néidín' in Irish):
As I leave behind Néidín
It's like purple splashed on green
My soul is strangely fed
Through the winding hills ahead
And she plays a melody
On wind and streams for me
Won't you remember?
Won't you remember?
Won't you remember me?
Finally, Cassie's family is grateful for the excellent and compassionate care she received from her medical providers (Evercare, Accent Care, Friends and Family Senior Program, Vassar Brothers Medical Center, and Hudson Valley Hospice). The family also wishes to thank her caregiver and dear friend Sonia Anthony of Poughkeepsie, NY.
Calling hours are on Friday, April 28, from 4-7pm at Sweets Funeral Home in Hyde Park. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Saturday, April 29, at Regina Coeli Church, Hyde Park, NY. Her son, Fr. William McIntyre, OFM, will preside.
