Obituary

Justin Gregory Murphy Sr., 79, of Poughkeepsie and former longtime Hyde Park resident, died peacefully on April 2, 2024, at Vassar Bros. Medical Center with his family by his side.

Born December 11, 1944, in New York City, he was the son of John V. and Agnes Ryan Murphy.

Justin worked primarily as a HVAC Designer. Later in his career he transitioned to working as a State Hospital Therapy Aide.

Justin was extremely proud of and loved spending time with his thirteen grandchildren. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Hyde Park Council 6111, and TMIY (This Man Is You) at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Poughkeepsie. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and traveling, especially his trips to Italy. Justin could often be found tinkering in the garage or on a project for the house. He believed there wasn't anything that duct tape couldn't fix; made mean mashed potatoes and roast beef as well as an unbeatable ice cream soda. Midnight trips to the kitchen for a spoonful of peanut butter were also not out the ordinary.

On June 26, 1965, in Maspeth, Queens, he married his beloved wife of 59 years, Arlene Citarella who survives at home.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his six children, Dawn M. Carolei; Justin G. Murphy Jr. and wife, Kerri; John V. Murphy and wife, Tracey; Christopher J. Murphy and wife, Kimberly; Kimberly A. Murphy; and Tracey L. Galarza and husband, Byron; and thirteen grandchildren, Danielle, Anthony, Christopher, Richard, Patrick, Kerry, Emma, Caitlyn, Alex, Ryan, Sara, Madison, and Mackenzie, his brother, Richard Murphy; two sisters, Mary Visvardis and Ellen Giles, all of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will begin at 10am on Saturday April 6, 2024, at Our Lady of the Rosary, 185 Hudson View Drive, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. There are no calling hours.

Justin's family respectfully requests memorial donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. (www.stjude.com)
