Obituary

Joseph Leo Sokolowski, passed away at home on December 23rd, 2022, with his family by his side after a long battle with Lewy body dementia.

Born July 23, 1937, in Unionvale, he was the son of the late Joseph Anthony and Louise Turolski Sokolowski.

Leaving school in 8th grade, at the age of 16 to take care of his family farm, he gained the knowledge and hard work ethic that stayed with him the rest of his life.

Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963.

On October 19th, 1967, in Rhinebeck, Joe married the former Joyce Lee Goldberger. His wife of 55 years, Mrs. Sokolowski, passed away just hours later to be reunited with her husband.

A union carpenter for the Local #203 and the Local #1000, he helped to build many buildings in Dutchess County, including Barnes and Nobles in Poughkeepsie, Shop Rite on Rte. 44, and the original McDonald's building in Hyde Park. He was talented enough to build his family a home, where they still reside today.

In his younger years Joe was involved in the FFA and was an active member of the Polish Club in Poughkeepsie, the Moose Club in Hyde Park, and enjoyed using his CB radio.

Joe could often be found mowing his lawn on his John Deere tractor and taking care of his garden, most times with a cold Budweiser or a Pepsi in hand; going to the horse races in Saratoga with his wife, attending his grandkids sporting events when he was able to, and more recently watching old western movies, playing solitaire on the computer, and watching game shows on T.V.

Joseph is survived by his two children; Susan Sokolowski of Portland OR, and Tina Boryk and Husband John, of Clinton; three grandchildren; Michael, Ryan, and Olivia Boryk.

He is also survived by his sister Constance (Connie) Lahey, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Along with his parents he was also predeceased by his brothers and sisters, John Sokolowski, Leonard Sokolowski, Harry Sokolowski, Josephine Pratt, Irene Miner, Millie Roberts, and Francis (Fran) Hoag.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Hudson Valley Hospice, especially his aide Keisha for taking care of Joe in his final days.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.

Memorial calling hours for Joyce and Joe will be from 3 to 6pm, on January 7th, 2022, a memorial service will take place at 6pm.

Inurnment of Joyce and Joe's cremains will take place privately, at Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date when the horses are running.
