Obituary

Joseph S Farkas, 92, born November 16, 1933, in Budapest, Hungary, died peacefully on March 10, 2026 with his family by his side.

Joe married his wife, Gizella, on March 9,1958 in Poughkeepsie, NY who survives at home. He is also survived by a son, Joseph and wife Elizabeth of Wendell, NC, and daughter Deborah Wooden and husband Ernest of Red Hook, NY.

Joseph (Joe) immigrated from Hungary in 1957 and settled in Poughkeepsie, NY working his first job at Hudson River Psychiatric Hospital where he learned the English language and met his future wife, Gizella Vescey, who had also immigrated from Hungary.

Joe went on to start his own welding company and became highly skilled at his craft. But Joe's generous heart and not wanting to actually charge his customers for his work didn't make good business sense and he closed shop and started working as a welder at New York Trap Rock until his retirement in 1995. But his favorite job of all was being "Poppy" to his three granddaughters, Lindsay Farkas and husband Chris Hearn of Sanford, NC, Kaylee Farkas of Wendell, NC and Allisyn Farkas of Knightdale, NC. all of whom he was incredibly proud!

Joe had lots of activities he enjoyed: hunting, fishing, cooking, sports, gardening, watching Nascar races, wrestling and old movies. He had a knack for remembering dates no matter how long ago and always had a number-related stat for any conversation. He loved animals of all kinds and was known to bring one home a time or two. Joe was a lifetime member of both the Crum Elbow Gun Club in Hyde Park, and the Shamrock Association in Poughkeepsie. His love-for-life spirit will remain alive by the countless memories that will be spoken of often by his family who adored him.
