Obituary

Jim Langan, 76, of Rhinecliff, New York, passed away on February 15, 2023. Jim died peacefully after many challenges with cancer. Throughout, he lived his life with meaning, wonderful friendships, humor, and love for his family.

Jim was born on February 1, 1947 to Leo J. Langan and Isabel Langan in New York City. Jim graduated from Cushing Academy, where he played varsity football and basketball. He then went on to receive his BA from Boston College.

Jim was known to be a die-hard Boston sports fan and loved to go to Red Sox games any chance he could. Some of his favorite players included Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice, Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski. Almost anyone who knew Jim heard him tell the story of attending every home game during "The Impossible Dream" 1967 season.

Jim's passion for Boston sports was only rivaled by his passion for politics. While in college, Jim volunteered for Senator Bobby Kennedy's presidential campaign, and after college spent time as a speech writer in the White House during the Nixon administration. These experiences helped create the self-described "political junkie." After years in the financial arena in Boston, he switched to a career in the media industry. In the late 1980s and 90s, Jim worked as an executive producer for The Morton Downey Jr. Show. Jim founded The Hudson Valley News and served as the publication's executive editor for fourteen years. He loved bringing news to the community in his clever writing style that was engaging, colorful, and often served up with a touch of humor.

His wit, humor and charm were like no other. He will be remembered for his exuberance and love of life. He was the ultimate storyteller and had unbelievable, but true, stories about meeting everyone from John F. Kennedy to Ann Margret. It is lost on no one that he passed on the same day as Raquel Welch!

Deeply loved, Jim will be missed by his numerous friends and family. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Caroline Carey, whose life together was full of travel, entertaining, and love; his children, Jay Langan and Becca Bunn; daughter-in-law, Kristen Langan; son-in-law, Joel Bunn; and adorable grandsons, Oliver and Reed Langan and Tyler and Jake Bunn, who brought him enormous joy.

There will be a celebration of life planned for late spring.
