Jack (Gioachino) P. Russo, 94, formerly of Peekskill, NY, passed away on April 17, 2022, Easter Sunday at Vassar Brothers Hospital.
Jack was born on September 6, 1927, in NYC to Teresa (Stafforini) and Giuseppe Russo. He grew up on a farm in Montrose, NY and graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School. While a teen, Jack had multiple paper routes and worked for the railroad during the summer months.
He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1946 where he served aboard the USS Rochester until he was honorably discharged to care for his ailing mother.
Jack later was employed as a boiler operator for the VA Medical Center, Montrose, NY until he retired at 83. While
there, he illegally fed every feral cat on the premises. On the side, Jack dabbled as a loan shark and bookie and was the master of inventions (clothes pin patent).
Mr. Russo is survived by his daughter Jacqueline Russo (Hyde Park, NY), his sister Caroline (Russo) Serrano (Maryland) and numerous nieces (Rosemarie Post) and nephews.
Mr. Russo is predeceased by the love of his life Barbara Roll, his sisters Margaret (Russo) O'Connor and Letitia Russo and brothers Rudolph Russo and Albert Russo.
Jack's daughter Jacqueline was his world and he passed on so much to her: a strong faith in God, love of all animals, ridiculous sense of humor, education, and a strong work ethic, to look for compassion in the face of despair, operating a stick shift (you will never be stranded), and the importance of a really good Italian wedge (provolone has to be sharp) and to never give up.
Until we meet again Daddy....I love you more.
A thank you to all the friends Jack made while at the Manor at Woodside (Bird Man) and, more recent, at Lutheran Care Center.
A private burial will take place at the Assumption Cemetery, Cortlandt, NY.
