Herbert Sheldon
Meyerson
May 3, 1941 — Feb 28, 2025
Herbert Sheldon Meyerson passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 28, 2025, at the Hudson Valley Hospice Home in Hyde Park, N.Y. Born on May 3, 1941, in the Bronx, N.Y. Herb's zest for life was always evident. At age 15, before he could drive a car, Herb achieved his pilot's license, often hitchhiking the 60 miles north to and from flying lessons at Stormville Airport. After attending Plattsburgh State College and completing his education at Hunter College in Manhattan, Herb proudly served his country in the Army Chemical Corps at Fort Devens, Mass.
Following his military service, Herb married his beloved wife of 59 years, Adrienne Marchand Meyerson, and embarked on a varied career. He was a respected salesman and sales trainer at Pitney Bowes Corp. before using his considerable hands-on skills as a member of Carpenter Local 157 in New York City. Eventually, Herb's try-anything spirit led him to start several businesses, including a pioneering laundromat/mail center as well as a magic shop that delighted his two young daughters, Lorraine and Denise Marie.
Herb's youthful enthusiasm for adventure, nature, creativity, and community never waned. When he wasn't flying small airplanes, it was radio-controlled model airplanes—or kayaking the Delaware or Hudson Rivers, or hours-long biking or hiking excursions, or making pottery, or travel, or serving his community through volunteerism. Herb gave his time and energy as a president and board member to Friends of the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area, volunteered annually for his cherished Delaware River Sojourn, and spent a lifetime supporting social justice causes in every way he could.
He is survived by his wife, Adrienne; daughter Lorraine, wife of Evan Rothman and mother of beloved grandson Ike Rothman; daughter Denise Marie, partner of Tommy Brennan; and the countless family, friends, and community members whose lives Herb touched. Donations in Herb's name may be made to The Friends of the Staatsburg (N.Y.) Library; a celebration of his life is being planned for the spring.
