Helen
Theofanus
Jul 18, 1928 — Dec 14, 2022
Pauline and I thank you for all the prayers.
Our mom Helen passed away peacefully tonight at home surrounded by family.
At the age of 19 not speaking a word of English she boarded the Queen Elizabeth ship with a small suitcase in her hand bound for America from the island of Cyprus. She and Gus met in NYC and had a beautiful life together. In 1958 they bought a summer resort in the Catskills and named it Cyprus Forest after their beloved country. Families from New York City would come and spend their summers up there -- summer after summer. Even after Gus died in 1999, she continued to run it in his honor. It was a lot of work for her alone, but she knew how much he loved it there and kept it open until 2001.
In 1969, Helen and Gus bought Wardies Deli where Helen enjoyed working at the cash register. Both she and Gus were so well known and loved in the community.
Helen experienced 94 beautiful years and life events on this earth. Aside from the birth of her children and grandchildren, her biggest thrill was meeting Queen Elizabeth when she came to the island of Cyprus when she herself was a teenager. We can't imagine life without her, but we are so grateful she was ours for so long and we know that she is dancing in heaven with her parents, grandparents, and all her siblings that preceded her in death. We will see her again. She will be waiting to greet us, and we will all rejoice being back together.
Rest in peace beautiful lady
