Staatsburg – Giancarlo 'Carlo' Serena, 84, a Staatsburg resident, formerly of Poughkeepsie and Cavasso Nuovo, Italy, passed away peacefully at home on February 1, 2022. Born in Cavasso Nuovo (Friuli Region of Italy) on October 5, 1937, he was the son of Osvaldo and Alicia Resto Serena. Carlo attended the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, a mosaic school in Spilimbergo, Italy, and was a Union Mason with BAC Local #5. He was proud to have his mosaics hanging in a church in his hometown of Cavasso, and to have worked on the restoration of the marble stairs at the Mills Mansion in Staatsburg. A true artist, he was an active member of the Artists' Collective of Hyde Park. Carlo also enjoyed fishing and tending to his vegetable garden. He strived every year to grow the most abundant crop of tomatoes ever. The more tomatoes and the larger they were, the better! His family and friends were often the beneficiaries of his green thumb. In May of 1997, he married the former Ann Laurie Goodwin. Mrs. Serena survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother, Renato Serena, and wife, Edi; sister, Marisa Serena; nephew, Ivan DeRos; grandnephew, Alan DeRos; grandniece, Melissa DeRos; and grandnephew, Nicholas DeRos, all of Italy. He is also survived by several cousins and many friends here in the United States and in Italy. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his niece, Patrizia DeRos. A period of visitation will be from 1 to 2 PM, Saturday, February 5th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. A prayer service will follow at 2 PM. His burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
