George Bovard
Mclaughlin
Feb 10, 1940 — May 25, 2025
George Bovard McLaughlin, of Millbrook, New York, passed away peacefully on the evening of Sunday, May 25, 2025, at the Hudson Valley Hospice House. He was 85.
Born in Beaver, PA on February 10, 1940, George was the son of Carolyn Dillon McLaughlin and John Russell McLaughlin. In 1959, he graduated from Western Reserve Academy, and in 1963, earned a Bachelor of Arts from Colby College, where he majored in English and was a member of Delta Upsilon.
After graduating from college, George enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country for four years. While in the Army, he completed Officer Candidate School and was assigned to the Army Security Agency in Bad Aibling, Germany. He was awarded an Army Commendation Medal and rose to the rank of Captain before being honorably discharged in 1968.
Returning to civilian life, George joined the management training program at the Kendall Corporation, and continued with Kendall when it became a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive. Over the course of his career, he held positions at a number of small manufacturing companies until his retirement.
George is survived by his children—Christian, George, and Elisabeth—and by four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his third son, Nathaniel, who died in 1993, and by his brother, John, who died in 2017.
George was married twice. His first marriage, to Elspeth—the mother of his children—ended in divorce. In 1981, George met his second wife, Suzanne. They were married for 40 years and shared a joyful and devoted partnership until Suzanne's passing in 2023.
George will be remembered most for his warmth, gregariousness, and insatiable intellectual curiosity. His passions were as wide-ranging as they were heartfelt: photography, gardening, tennis, astronomy, cooking, poetry, history, languages, music, art, architecture, movies—and German beer. A gifted storyteller with a sharp wit and a deep appreciation for language, George had a rare ability to captivate others with his reflections, humor, and insight. His joy in learning and his love of sharing what he discovered left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
