Obituary

Fred Joseph Hues ("Joe") 88, of Staatsburg, NY, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Friday, July 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and devotion to his family.

Born on November 5, 1937, in Poughkeepsie, NY, he was the son of the late Fred H. Hues and Rosean Layman Hues. On July 7, 1963, he married the love of his life Susan Lown in Hyde Park, NY with whom he shared nearly 63 wonderful years of marriage. Though he passed away just days before their 63rd wedding anniversary, their life together is a true testament to enduring love, and devotion.

Joe was a self-employed mason and bricklayer, known locally as FJ Hues Masonry. He served as a lieutenant with the Roosevelt Fire Department and was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Rhinebeck. He was also a proud 65- year member of Bricklayers Local #44.

Some of Joe's best memories were made with family at the lake house upstate where he enjoyed making pizzas, driving his jeep through the woods, and relaxing by the fire. He had a lifelong love of gardening and took great pride in growing tomatoes from seed each spring, carefully nurturing them from tiny seedlings to a bountiful harvest, that he shared far and wide with friends and family. He also found great joy in caring for his chickens, who would happily follow him around the yard in anticipation of a treat. Joe will be remembered as a hard worker, who was known to find a job for just about anyone who stopped by to visit, though no one could keep up with his pace. Above all else, his greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, "Poppy", and "Great-Poppy" who treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His love, strength, devotion, and work ethic will be deeply cherished.

In addition to his beloved wife, Susan, he is survived by his sons, Shawn Hues (Deidra) of Colorado, Scott Hues (Maria) of Staatsburg, Kurt Hues (Shana) of Staatsburg, Daniel Hues (Rose) of Rhinebeck; his daughter, Sharon DeMatteo (Mark) of Wallkill. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Samantha (Nick), Joseph, Elizabeth, Reid, Thomas, Cody, Lucan, Matthew, and Cole; and two great-grandchildren, Savannah and Caleb who all lovingly called him "Poppy". In addition, he is survived by many siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends.

At Joe's request, there will be no services, a private burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the West Clinton Fire Company located at 219 Hollow Rd, Staatsburg, NY 12580 or the American Heart Association.
