Evelyn M. Shaffer, 71, a longtime local resident of Hyde Park, died peacefully at home on May 28, 2023, with her family by her side.

Born November 20, 1951, in the Bronx, she was the daughter of Alfonso and Ana Segarra Martinez.

Evelyn worked as a cook at the Astor Head Start in Poughkeepsie until her retirement in 2021.

In her younger years, Mrs. Shaffer bowled in local leagues at the former Hoe Bowl Country Lanes in Hyde Park and enjoyed working with pottery.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gary Shaffer Sr. in 2003.

Evelyn loved spending time with her family. Survivors include her son, Gary Shaffer Jr.; son, Eric Gonzalez (Laura); daughter, Corrine Shaffer; eight grandchildren, Branden, Micah, and Marley Gonzalez, Derrick Shaffer, Davyon Battle, and Alyssa McWhirt, Andrew and Kayla Shaffer; and three great grandchildren, Jace Gonzalez and Noah Shaffer, and Jayana Shaffer.

She was also survived by her sister, Arleen Maisonet (Eddie) and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Alvin Martinez.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 PM, Thursday, June 1st at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

Funeral services will be at 10 AM on Friday, June 2nd at the Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the Lawn Crypt Garden at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
