Donald H.
Hopkins
Jul 31, 1938 — Apr 27, 2026
Donald H. Hopkins, 87, a longtime resident of Poughkeepsie, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Born on July 31, 1938, in Worcester, Massachusetts, he was the son of Francis E. Hopkins and Doris M. Lundquist Hopkins. Donald attended the University of Massachusetts and later graduated from the Wentworth Institute of Technology.
In the early 1960s, Donald proudly served in the United States Army, a period of his life he carried with quiet pride. Following his military service, he began a career with IBM, where he worked for more than thirty years until his retirement.
Donald was known throughout his neighborhood as a truly good neighbor—steadfast, dependable, and always ready to lend a hand. Whether helping with yardwork or showing up after a snowstorm to clear a walkway, he never hesitated to offer his time and energy. His selflessness, honesty, and generosity were constants in his life and a comfort to those around him.
On October 30, 1965, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester, he married the former Carol E. Berg. Mrs. Hopkins survives at home.
In addition to his wife, Donald is survived by his five children: James C. Hopkins, Deborah L. Marchant, Mark D. Hopkins and his longtime companion, Leanne DePalma, Judith C. Hopkins, and David F. Hopkins, all of Poughkeepsie. He is also survived by five grandchildren—David Marchant, Jackson and Gavin Olenski, and Jade and Taylor DePalma; many nieces and nephews, especially Pamela and Tara Strong; and numerous cousins.
He was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Strong.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.
Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 PM on Saturday, May 9th, at Sweet's Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park. A Family Celebration of Donald's life will take place at 2:30 PM during the visitation.
To keep Donald's spirit alive, the Hopkins family asks that you consider helping a neighbor in need or becoming an organ donor.
