Obituary

Dave Quimby, 73- a lifelong Hyde Park/Red Hook resident passed away peacefully October 18th at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.

He had an amazing life.

To many in the Dutchess County area, David was probably best known for the many years he spent as the greeter at Sam's Club in Kingston. Sitting contently on his scooter at the front of the store, he had a cheery hello for everyone. Stickers for the kids. A baseball or football score for his regulars. A joke, a nugget of hard-earned wisdom, and could even tell you where the chicken cutlets were located in the frozen food aisle.

Born November 27, 1950 to John Sr. & Betty Quimby, he was afflicted at birth with Cerebral Palsy. Rather than let this affliction define him-- he fought every obstacle put in his way to define himself.

When he was told by a doctor he couldn't play high school sports, he drove himself relentlessly to learn soccer and made the FDR team. Not allowed to play football, he versed himself in the intricacies of the game and successfully coached a Hyde Park Pop Warner team for many years. He was awarded the Most Improved Student Award at his Roosevelt High School graduation and witnessed a spontaneous standing ovation from parents, teachers and students alike.

Throughout his life Dave worshipped— (in no particular order) The Green Bay Packers, The Red Sox, The Dodgers, his family, his friends, Neil Diamond, John Wayne, Diners, Chicken Salad, B&W Westerns, baking cheesecakes, old cars, old dogs, The Dave Clark 5, sports memorabilia and Bingo.

He didn't care much for The New York Yankees or flying.

David was predeceased by his parents an older brother, John; and a stepfather; Malcom Simmons. His survivors include his sisters and their spouses, Elisabeth Mehalso (Robert) & Jean Osika (Timothy), a sister-in-law, Sue Quimby and many nieces and nephews all of whom he adored.

David Graham Quimby lived his life HIS way. Good for him. And even better for us—all the lives he reached out and touched with his joy.
