Obituary

Poughkeepsie - Craig P. Whittaker, 64, a lifelong area resident, died unexpectedly while removing snow at his shop on January 8, 2024. His sudden death will be felt by all that knew him.

Born September 13, 1959, in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of Russell V. Whittaker Sr. and Olga M. Pizzarelli Whittaker.

A graduate of F. D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, Craig was a skilled machinist and general jack-of-all trades. He loved music and it would always be heard when walking up to his shop, Whit's Machine Shop. He started working for the MTA several years ago and remained there until his death. A highlight of Craig's career was the time he worked at Perkin-Elmer's Danbury Optical Systems Unit on components for the Hubble Telescope.

Those close to Craig knew he fought his demons over the years, but his family was proud that he had conquered them.

Survivors include his three brothers, Russ (Colleen), Garry (Barbara), and Brian; nephew, Chad; nieces, Rachael and Hillary; and several great nieces and nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Bruce.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial visitation will be from 1 to 2 PM, Monday, January 15th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. A service will follow at 2 PM with Fr. Michael Morris officiating.

His ashes will be buried in the family plot at Union Cemetery of Hyde Park at the family's convenience.
