Obituary

Carol Elizabeth Hopkins, 85, a longtime resident of Poughkeepsie, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2026, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Born on September 16, 1941, in Worcester, MA, she was the daughter of Carl E. Berg and Ethel Valentine Dinsdale Berg.

Carol spent her life caring for others, both personally and professionally. She worked as a Nurse's Aide at The Pines in Poughkeepsie for more than forty years, retiring in 2020. Her kindness, patience, and steady presence made her a beloved caregiver to countless residents and families.

Carol and her late husband, Don, shared a joyful passion for Volkswagen Beetles and were proud members of the Volkswagen Club. Together, they spent many happy years traveling to meets, shows, and gatherings with fellow enthusiasts.

She loved 1990s country music and treasured the trips she took with her sister to concerts—moments filled with laughter, music, and memories that stayed close to her heart.

On October 30, 1965, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester, MA, she married Donald H. Hopkins, who predeceased her on April 27, 2026.

Carol is survived by her five children, all of Poughkeepsie: James C. Hopkins, Deborah L. Marchant, Mark D. Hopkins and his longtime companion, Leanne DePalma, Judith C. Hopkins, and David F. Hopkins. She is also survived by five grandchildren—David Marchant, Jackson and Gavin Olenski, and Jade and Taylor DePalma; her brother, David Berg, and his wife, Betty Jean, of Utah; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Barbara Hallihan and Nancy Berg.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Memorial calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 PM on Sunday, October 18th, at Sweet's Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park. A Family Celebration of Carol's life will take place at 2:30 PM during the visitation.
