Barbara L.
Cary
Apr 24, 1947 — Jul 5, 2026
Barbara L. Cary, 79, of Hyde Park, New York, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
Born on April 24, 1947, in Poughkeepsie, Barbara was the daughter of the late Joseph and Frances Neuwirth Lezon.
On May 12, 1973, in Poughkeepsie, Barbara married Raymond "Bud" Cary, who survives at home.
Barbara found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved listening to polka music, spending time crafting and creating do-it-yourself projects, and was actively involved with 4-H while her children were growing up. She enjoyed baking, decorating for Christmas, and carrying on the traditions that made every holiday feel special. Even after the world had changed, Barbara remained delightfully old-fashioned in many ways. She preferred hanging clothes on the clothesline, even during the winter, because that was simply how she believed things should be done.
Above all else, Barbara treasured her family. Whether celebrating holidays, gathering around the table for a meal, or spending an evening playing cards, her happiest moments were those spent with the people she loved. She adored her grandchildren, Emily and Makenzie, and she had a special place in her heart for her cherished "grand pups," Stella and Roo.
Barbara was a woman of remarkable strength, unwavering conviction, and an enormous heart. Those who knew her understood that she spoke honestly, stood firmly by what she believed, and never accepted mediocrity, especially when someone's well-being was involved. Beneath that strength, however, was a woman whose capacity to care for others knew no limits. She was the kind of neighbor people hope to have but rarely find. If someone needed help, Barbara was there. Whether giving someone the coat off her back, insisting on babysitting so young parents could enjoy a night out, or quietly helping someone through a difficult time, she never expected recognition or anything in return. Helping others was simply who she was.
Her years of volunteer service were never about titles or recognition. They gave Barbara a sense of purpose and allowed her to dedicate herself to serving others. She believed that every emergency deserved her very best and that every volunteer deserved to be trained the right way because lives depended on it. She held herself and those around her to the highest standards, knowing that preparation, knowledge, and commitment could make the difference between life and death. Through both her service and her teaching, Barbara touched countless lives, many of whom will never fully know the impact she had on them.
Barbara devoted much of her life to serving her community through emergency services. A dedicated volunteer and leader, she was active with the Ladies Auxiliary of Roosevelt Engine Company No. 3, the Roosevelt Fire District Support Team, the Roosevelt Rescue Squad as 1st Lieutenant and Secretary/Treasurer, and the Roosevelt Fire Department as Treasurer. She also served as Secretary of both the Dutchess County EMS Council and the Dutchess County Fire Chiefs' Council, and shared her knowledge as an EMS instructor at Dutchess Community College and the Dutchess County Bureau of Fire. Her selfless dedication, leadership, and willingness to teach left a lasting impact on the countless lives she touched.
To her family, Barbara's greatest gift was not found in the things she said, but in the example she set. She taught those who loved her that strength and compassion could exist together, that standing up for what is right should never come at the expense of kindness, and that caring for others is one of life's greatest purposes. She was endlessly proud of her children and never missed an opportunity to tell them how much she loved them or how proud she was of the people they had become. Every holiday card, every thoughtful note, and every heartfelt message reflected that love.
The family's favorite memories are the moments when Barbara simply allowed herself to enjoy life. Sitting around the table with family, sharing stories, playing cards, enjoying one of her beloved mojitos, and laughing until she could barely catch her breath revealed the joyful woman behind her strong exterior. Her smile was infectious, her laughter unforgettable, and those moments will remain treasured memories for all who were fortunate enough to share them.
Barbara never measured a life by what a person had. She measured it by whether they needed someone, and if they did, she was there. That spirit of generosity, compassion, and selfless service will remain her enduring legacy and will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her husband Bud, Barbara is survived by her daughter, Krista Smith and her husband, Nicholas, and her son, Sean Cary and his wife, Katie. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Emily and Makenzie Smith. She also leaves behind her cherished "grand pups," Stella and Roo.
Barbara is also survived by her brothers, Joseph Lezon and his wife, Cindy, and John Lezon and his wife, Bunnie; her sister, Judy Burleski and her husband, Joseph; as well as several nieces, nephews, and great nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Lois Lezon.
