Obituary

On February 6, 2022, Ann Dougher died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 91 from Covid 19. Ann was born on March 18, 1930 in Olyphant, Pennsylvania to William Wheeler and Mary McGuiness. She was a child of the Great Depression and was a young girl during World War II. She attended two years of college at Marymount University before marrying William Dougher in 1949. The couple moved to Peekskill, New York and by the time she was 37 she had seven children. That was the year she started Ann's Grocery which was open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., 364 days a year. She took Christmas off. She worked hard, was friendly to everyone, and loved nothing better than to share a good laugh with her customers. After a few years she closed Ann's Grocery and went on to have a long and successful career at Reader's Digest where she became an indispensable part of the editorial team for more than 20 years. She loved her job and made many friends there. She and William were married for almost half a century. She was a devoted and generous partner and great comfort to him through his final days. As a mother, she was the opposite of a helicopter parent, often yelling at us kids to "Don't come back until lunch" or "Go play in the woods." She was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles, and was a big fan of Jeopardy on TV. She was smart, kind, and a lot of fun. We were blessed to have had her in our lives all these years. She is survived by six of her seven children—Patricia O'Sullivan of Nyack, NY; Rayola Dougher of McLean, VA; Coleen Widmyer of Charles Town, WV; Bill Dougher of Germantown, NY; Maureen Vermazen of Nyack, NY; and Raymond Dougher of Merritt Island, FL. Her son Michael Dougher died in 2019. Her life was further blessed with ten grandchildren and she lived long enough to hold five great grandchildren in her arms and heart. She will be dearly missed by all. Calling hours will be from 3 to 6 Pm, Thursday, February 10th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Friday, February 11th at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Parish, 185 Hudson View Dr., Poughkeepsie. Entombment will follow in the Community Mausoleum at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. To send an online condolence or for directions, please visit www.sweetsfuneralhome.com.
