Obituary

Angelina Rose Gallo of Poughkeepsie, NY died of natural causes after being serenaded by her family for her 99th birthday on March 22, 2023. She was born to Gaetano and Frances (Santorelli) Urciuoli in Brooklyn, NY on March 22, 1924 and grew up in Poughkeepsie. She met her husband, Dominic Gallo, at the Mount Carmel Feast when she was 16 years old. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, Dominic joined the army, proposing to Angie just before he left for basic training. They married on his first visit home–three years later–on March 25, 1945 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Poughkeepsie. Their love story over those three years is documented in the letters they exchanged during the war–letters she kept and cherished her entire life.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and a member of the St Ann's and St. Rita's Societies. Angie was a self-starter and ran a few businesses with her husband. Locals still remember her homemade pizza sold at the Spratt Park snack bar. She also owned a restaurant on Church St. where she served breakfast and lunch. High school students she served would greet her years later on the street with a big hug for "Mama Gallo." Starting at age 50, she helped to run the Dairy Queens in Wappingers, Newburgh and Millerton before her family kindly insisted she retire at 80.

She loved to travel. In the 1960s, she went to Europe to visit one of her sons stationed there. She and her husband wintered in West Palm Beach, Florida and both enjoyed attending Dairy Queen conventions around the country. After her husband's death in 2005, Angie (at 82) returned to her mother's birthplace in Italy with four of her grandchildren, bringing tears to her relatives eyes as she spoke the Italian of an older generation that was rarely heard.

On Sundays, after church, she and her husband could always be found at home welcoming children and grandchildren with a pot of her famous meatballs simmering on the stove. It took years to duplicate her recipe as ingredients were never measured. She loved to cook and host backyard parties with a large extended family that included much-loved cousins, nieces and nephews. She had a large circle of friends, all of whom predeceased her.

She taught her daughter and many of her grandchildren to crochet and made treasured blankets for marriages and births that are still cherished. She was an avid reader and never fell asleep without praying her rosary.

Angie is survived by her four children and their spouses: Louis and Jean Gallo (Hyde Park), Dominic and Sharon Gallo (Staatsburg), Frances and Thomas Dalbo (Hyde Park), John and Lia Gallo (Marlboro), as well as fifteen grandchildren: Rebecca and Michael Weston, Elizabeth and Mark Zych, Jessica Gallo, Jeffrey and Bethany Gallo, Margaret Gallo, Vanessa Gallo, Justin and Donna Gallo, Krystle Gallo & Michael Lareau, Anthony and Krista Gallo, Theresa Dalbo, Stephanie and Jim Dunn, Thomas and Tonya Dalbo, Brittany Gallo, Nicole Gallo and Dan Pruitt, John and Shanna Gallo, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings: Tony Urciuoli, George Urciuoli, and Anita Falanga, her husband of sixty years, and her grandson Anthony Dalbo, Sr.

Her family is extremely grateful to her two most recent caregivers, Charmaine and Diana, and to everyone else who gave their time and assistance from Community Home Healthcare and Hudson Valley Hospice.
