Obituary for Jerry Wayne Linster

Hyde Park, NY

Jerry Wayne Linster, 64, of Hyde Park, New York, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, from years of suffering from COPD - emphysema and other health issues.

Born July 2, 1954 in Winchester, VA, the son of Henry and Nila Johnson Linster. He graduated from Clarke County High school and Dowell J Howard Vocational School in 1974. Jerry proudly enlisted in the United States Navy in 1978 and re-enlisted in 1982. He was a submariner, serving on the USS Tinosa (SS-606); based in New London, Conn., Kittery, Maine and Norfolk, VA.. He enjoyed the adventure the Navy offered and seeing all parts of the world: Panama, Columbia, others but especially liked visiting Italy. He served as a torpedoman; was for a while on Shore patrol and won the 1984 PNS Boxing Smoker trophy. Called him the 'Sandman'.  

Jerry worked for federal facility contractors: under Meridian Management, Urban Meridian, Urban Joint Venture and New Horizons Industries. He started out as a maintenance mechanic and ended as project manager. He worked at the Department of State in DC, The World Trade Center in Baltimore, Maryland; the Orange County Courthouse and 17 other govt buildings in Orlando, Florida; the Naval Research Lab in Chesapeake Beach, Md.; part-time at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and his last location of work was The FDR Presidential Library and Museum and Henry Wallace Visitor's Center in Hyde Park, NY, which is where he resigned due to his illness.

He had been a member of the American Legion, Poughkeepsie, NY; was a volunteer member of the Ender’s Fire and Rescue in Berryville, VA for a few years, serving as fire fighter and an EMT. Jerry enjoyed spending time with his son and grandson; liked bowling with his brother and cousins; a competitive game of pool with his buddy and caregiver, Bill McGill and a good game of Poker with family members at the family reunions. The last three years, he attended the Old Salt's Pig Roast in Ashaway, R.I., where his brotherhood of the USS Tinosa SS-606, gather for a week of fellowship and remembrance. Last year, he was discharged from the hospital just in time to attend.

Surviving are his wife and caregiver, Sheryl Mae (Buckner) Linster, of Hyde Park, NY, a son, John Henry Linster, of Winchester, VA; a grandson, Elijah Ryan Linster (Germany); his father, Henry Linster of Berryville, VA; two brothers: Michael Linster and twin brother, Terry Linster, both of VA, along with many nieces and nephews.

Cremation was Jerry's choice and took place at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Jerry's family respectfully requests memorial donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or www.stjude.org.
