Obituary for James E. Whaley Jr.

James Edward Whaley Jr., age 83, of Hyde Park, died Saturday night, January 5th 2019 after a long illness and with his loving family by his side.
Born May 29, 1935 in Troy, New York; he was the son of the late James and Theresa (Gardner) Whaley. He was predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Bova.
He proudly served in the United States Air Force.
Jim had a long career in radio, starting at the young age of 15 when he built his own radio station for his high school. He went on to work as a DJ, announcer and radio programmer. He managed and worked at a number of radio stations in the local area, such a WHVW, WKIP and WCZX. He recorded thousands of commercials and served as the voice of the Dutchess County Fair among others. He retired in 2008 from the New York Empire State Development Corporation. However, he was most proud of his work chairing the March of Dimes in Hyde Park and his tenure serving as Supervisor of Hyde Park from 1994 to 1995.
On January 28, 1961 at St. John’s Church in Rensselaer, NY, he married the former Mary Ellen Farrell. His wife of 58 years survives at home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, James E Whaley III, and wife, Jill, of Clover, S.C.; daughter, Janine E. Beck and husband, Eric, of Marlboro; six grandchildren, Amelia A., Eleanor T. , and Madeline R. Whaley, and Tyler J., Austin J., and Emily R. Beck; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and relatives.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.
Memorial calling hours will be from 1 to 4 pm, Saturday, January 12th at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park. Fr. Michael Morris will conduct a prayer service at 3 Pm during the visitation. Military honors will follow.
