Obituary for Florence Elizabeth Hite

Mrs. Florence Elizabeth Hite, 100, passed away peacefully the evening of Saturday, October 6th at The Pines at Poughkeepsie.
Daughter of the late Samuel H. Freer and Margarite Grimont Freer, Mrs. Hite was born on October 18, 1917 in Walden, New York. She attended the public schools of Walden and graduated from Walden High School in 1935.
After graduation, she moved to Poughkeepsie to work at the Hudson River State Hospital where she would make many friends and meet the love of her life. She was united in holy matrimony to Iron Clayborn Hite on September 24, 1937 at the First Presbyterian Church in Pine Plains, New York. Their union was blessed with five children. Mr. Hite preceded her in death on May 11, 1960.
Mrs. Hite was elected to serve as Town Clerk of Hyde Park from 1961 to 1963. After serving as Town Clerk, Mrs. Hite worked in the Business Office of Dutchess Community College: retiring from her position as Account Clerk Stenographer in 1980.
Mrs. Hite was an active member of the Fairview Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and became a Lifetime Member of the Fairview Fire Company. Her Willingness to help wherever needed will be remembered by those who knew her. In addition to working at the College, Mrs. Hite was a highly regarded Avon representative for over 20 years and won numerous President Club awards for sales and recruiting.
An avid bowler, Mrs. Hite continued bowling well into her 90's with the Wednesday Morning Glories League at Mardi-Bob Lanes in Poughkeepsie. She loved flowers, animals, her family and her friends.         Those who knew and loved her will forever remember her strength of character and independent spirit.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Hite, son, Douglas C. Hite, sister, Margarite "Rita" Hinchcliff and brothers, William and Charles Freer. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Stanley Hite of Hartsville, SC, Karen Broska of Palm Bay, FL, and Jean Harris of Hyde Park; and sons-in-law, David Broska and Richard Harris; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial calling hours will be from 4 to 8 pm, Friday, October 12th at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. The Fairview Fire Company will conduct services at 7 Pm during the visitation.
Funeral services will be at 12:30 pm, Saturday, October 13th at the Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Beverley will officiate.
Burial of her ashes will follow in the family plot at Union Cemetery of Hyde Park.
