Doris Friedman Kelly died at her home in Hyde Park, NY on June 6, 2017 after a yearlong fight with cancer. She was 74.

Doris was born on December 17, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Isadore and Henrietta Friedman. She was a graduate of Martin Van Buren High School (class of 1960) and SUNY New Paltz (class of 1964).

She was a dedicated elementary school teacher for more than 25 years, working in the Hyde Park Central School District from 1964 to 1968 and the Poughkeepsie City School District from 1974 to 1998.

Doris was politically active throughout her life: she worked on the planning boards for the towns of Esopus and Hyde Park, served on the Hyde Park Town Council, was for many years a delegate to the NY State Democratic Party, and ran as the Democratic candidate for the District 20 Congressional seat in 2004. She belonged to many political and professional groups, including the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Hyde Park Democratic Committee, the Dutchess Democratic Women's Caucus, and the American Association of University Women, with whom she worked tirelessly to promote women's issues and support leadership opportunities for girls.

She is survived by her two daughters, Diane Kelly of Deerfield, Massachusetts and Sharon Migliaccio of Colfax, North Carolina; four grandchildren; and her brother, Lew Friedman of Brooklyn, NY.

A memorial celebrating Doris' life will be held from 3-5 pm on Sunday, July 16, at the Wallace Center, FDR Library & Museum, Hyde Park, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a scholarship established in her name that will help girls from low-income families attend the Eleanor Roosevelt Girls' Leadership Worldwide program.
