Alfred Paul Jiava, 85, a longtime Hyde Park resident, died peacefully on October 4, 2017 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie with his family by his side.

Born February 27, 1932 in South Boston, Mass., he was the son of the late Alfred and Mary (Grishey) Jiava.

Mr. Jiava worked at the United States Military Academy at West Point for many years until his retirement in 2002.

He proudly served in the United States Air Force for twenty years.

On June 28, 1962 in the Bronx, he married the former Catherine Seckler. Mrs. Jiava predeceased him in November 2007.

Survivors include his two sons, Christopher Jiava, and his wife, Lori, of Wappingers Falls, and Kevin Jiava of Hyde Park; daughter, Catherine Jiava, of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, AnaCristina Jiava, Christopher Matteo Jiava, and Andrew, Christopher, and Catie Reilly; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary F. Sullivan.

In keeping with his wishes, there are no calling hours. Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to the Hudson Valley Hero Project, 59 Harden Drive, Lagrangeville, NY 12540.

Arrangements are under the direction of Sweet’s Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
