Obituary for William T. Holland III

William Thomas Holland III, 70, passed away on February 21, 2018 with his family by his side. Born September 24, 1947 in Manhattan, he was the only son of William T. Holland and Rose Griffin Holland. He was the favorite brother of his five sisters.
He attended St. Barnabas Elementary School and Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx. After graduating from Dobbs Ferry High School, he attended Voorhees Technical Institute in Manhattan until the beginning of his military service in 1967. He was a Vietnam Veteran earning a Purple Heart during his tour of duty. In 1969, he became a member of the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department, retiring in 1999 as a detective.
In 1970, he married his childhood sweetheart, Patricia A. Wilders in Brooklyn. They went on to live and raise their family in Hyde Park. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his children: William T. Holland IV, Jessica Adams and Jeffrey Holland; daughters-in-law, Rosaleen Cardillo and Candice West. He was affectionately known as Poppy to his grandchildren: Gabrielle Holland, Dylan Holland, Kian Adams and Tyler Holland. Other survivors include his sisters, Regina Benvie, Kathryn Flato and Barbara Menti; brothers-in-law, Michael Benvie and William F. Wilders; sister-in-law, Valerie Wilders and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Rosemary Robertson and Patricia McPhilliamy; brothers-in-law, Ronald McPhilliamy, Michael Flato and John Menti. He was also predeceased by his in-laws, William and Ethelmae Wilders and Robert Holbeck; nephew, James McPhilliamy; and niece, Suzanne Wilders.
The family would like to thank Bill's doctors, Hospice and his caregivers Ernestine, Ellen, Mary and Sandra. We can never adequately thank our many friends and relatives for their love and support.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 pm, Sunday, February 25th at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Brendan Fitzgerald at 10 am, Monday, February 26th at Regina Coeli Church, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
Burial with military honors will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
