Obituary for Sylvester A. 'Shorty' Seal

Staatsburg – Sylvester Arnold Seal, affectionately referred to as ‘Shorty’, 82, died Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Northern Dutchess Hospital with his family by his side. A lifelong area resident, he has resided in Staatsburg for 47 years.
Born in Poughkeepsie on May 2, 1936, he was the son of the late Sylvester Andral Seal and Anna Owens Seal.
Shorty was a member of Poughkeepsie Moose Lodge #904 in Hyde Park and the International Union of Operating Engineers (Teamsters), Local 15C.
Mr. Seal worked at H.O. Penn Machinery Co., Poughkeepsie from 1962 until his retirement in 1996. Prior to H.O. Penn, he worked for Hyde Park Motors, International Harvester, C & E Trucking Co., and Effron Baking Co.
Shorty was a passionate member of several local racing teams, spending countless hours building and maintaining the cars, and worked as a Pit Chief. He was also an avid bowler, fisherman, and loved to camp. He spent many weekends roller-skating with his children.
On July 9, 1954 he married Anna I. Makely, of Oak Hill, Greene County, in Poughkeepsie. Mrs. Seal survives at home.
He is also survived by his son, David Seal and wife, Cathy, of Valrico, FL; son, Richard Seal of Neptune Beach, FL; daughter, Christy Anne Tompkins of Staatsburg. He was an enthusiastic grandfather to four surviving grandchildren, Christine McGuinness and husband, Kevin, Daniel Seal and wife, Jackie, all of Valrico, Amy Lynn Tompkins of Staatsburg, and Riki Meghan Seal of California. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Dylan, Kelsey, Chloe, Anna Belle, Braden, and Cori; sister, Ada Payanis of Berlin, CT; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, John and Stephen Seal; and three sisters, Joyce Smart, Margaret Rogers, and Adele Seal.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.
Memorial calling hours will be 5-7 pm, Thursday, May 10 at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. A celebration of his life will begin at 6:30 pm during the visitation, officiated by Rev. Arlene Dawber.
Burial of his ashes in the family plot in Potter Hollow Rural Cemetery, Potter Hollow, NY will take place at the convenience of the family.
