Obituary for Robert L. Arata

Hyde Park – Robert Louis Arata, 88, a longtime Hyde Park resident, died Wednesday, March 14, 2018.
     Born in Brooklyn on August 13, 1929, he was the son of the late Louis and Esther Vicovari Arata.
     Bob proudly served in the United States Army during the Japanese occupation in 1946-47.
     Mr. Arata worked at IBM as a test engineer and technical writer for 35 years until his retirement. In his retirement years, he was a substitute teacher at Dutchess County BOCES.
     An avid outdoorsman, he was a former Director for the Winnakee Land Trust and served on the Hyde Park Trail Committee. He also enjoyed woodworking and built the trail signs and kiosks on the Hyde Park Trail system.
     Bob was also active in the Hyde Park Pop Warner football program and served as president at one time.
     On November 23, 1950 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Poughkeepsie, he married the former Ann K. Cloonan. Mrs. Arata survives.
     In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, Thomas Arata of NYC, Robert Arata and wife, Christine, of Kingston, NH, Catherine Plumb and husband, Brian, of Hopkinton, MA, and Patrick Arata and wife, Lisa, of Montclair, NJ; seven grandchildren, Elise Arata, Kate, Matthew, and Daniel Plumb, Stephen Arata, and Alexander and Emily Arata; sister, Marylou Wajda and husband, Walter of Hyde Park; brother, Vincent Arata and wife, Kathie, of Hyde Park; and many nieces and nephews.
     In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, David Arata in 2010; and brother, John ‘Jack’ Arata in 1994.
     Calling hours will be Sunday, March 18th from 1 to 4 pm at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
     A prayer service will be conducted at 3 pm during the visitation.
     Burial in the family plot at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, will be at the convenience of the family.
