Obituary for Robert J. Gallagher

Robert J. Gallagher, 87, a lifetime Poughkeepsie resident, passed away peacefully on July 13 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, surrounded by his family. 

Born on December 25, 1930, he was the son of Charles Gallagher and Marion (Cunningham) Gallagher.  He served in the US Army during the Korean War.  He worked for the City of Poughkeepsie Water Department until his retirement in 1986 and was a bartender for many years at the Italian Center in Poughkeepsie.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years Barbara, sons Robert (Michael) Gallagher and his wife Chris, Kevin Gallagher and his wife Christine, and daughter Karen Ott. Robert is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.   In addition to his parents Charles Gallagher and Marion (Cunningham) Gallagher, he was predeceased by four brothers Joseph, Edward (Skinny), James, and William (Butch) and two sisters Gene and Catherine.  

Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, from 10 am to 11am at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., 4365 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park, NY 12538.  Funeral services will begin at 11am at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asked donations to be made on his behalf to the American Cancer Society, 2678 South Road, Suite 103, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 or www.cancer.org.
