Obituary for Melanie Krieger

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Melanie Maria Krieger, beloved mother, daughter and sister. She died peacefully on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at her home in Hyde Park.

Melanie was born in the City of Poughkeepsie on March 24, 1949.  She was the daughter of Frank and Mary Serra.

She attended schools in Hyde Park and Poughkeepsie and graduated from Vassar College in 1971 with degrees in Psychology and English. She worked for Dutchess County Department of Social Services for 35 years, retiring as Director of Children’s Services.

She is survived by her son, Matthew Goglia, and his wife, Deborah; her mother, Mary; her sister, Angela Barreca, and her husband, Steven. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren, Antonio and Isabela; her nephew, Christopher Barreca; and her niece, Sarah Siefert, and her husband, Dan, along with their children, Anna and Lydia.

Melanie was a joy to know and loved by all. She was pleasant and never complained throughout her long illness, various treatments or surgeries. She will be remembered for her positivity, good-naturedness and kindness.

Calling hours will be from 4-6pm on Tuesday, February 27th at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Wednesday, February 28th at Regina Coeli Catholic Church in Hyde Park.

Entombment will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Poughkeepsie.

The family would like to thank all of the staff at Hospice for their kindness and compassion, along with all of Melanie’s medical providers who worked tirelessly to keep her healthy, happy and comfortable throughout her journey.
