Obituary for Lucy A. Farrell

Lucy A. Farrell, 90, a lifelong area resident, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at the Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie.
Lucy was born on July 27, 1927 to the late Adam and Nancy Quaqliata Lupparelli. She was a 1944 graduate of F. D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park.
On March 12, 1945, she married Robert J. Farrell, who predeceased her in 2000.
Lucy was very creative and pursued many activities during her lifetime. She began her creative endeavors as a young mother of five making tiny shell jewelry which she sold to Luckey Platt in Poughkeepsie, and years later, she owned and operated a ceramic shop in Hyde Park, where she taught classes for many years.
She traveled the northeast with her friend, Lew Ogden, in search of supplies and they had many interesting adventures, which she laughingly shared with all. She attended painting seminars resulting in beautiful artwork presently hanging in the homes of her children. She wrote a number of stories and poems that she shared with her family and friends, which we will all treasure.
Lucy participated in many activities during her time at Lutheran Care Center, with her favorites being bingo and anything which involved crafting, painting or drawing. During her last months at Lutheran Care Center, Lucy recalled many of the old songs from the 1940s and would entertain us with her renditions of them.
Lucy is survived by her three daughters, Patricia Tortarella of Port St. Lucie, FL, Karen Silveira and husband, Jose, of Longmont, CO, and Cynthia Farrell and her partner, Julie Vassilakos of Colonie, NY, and her son, Robert Farrell Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Poughkeepsie.
She is also survived by eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her son, David Farrell, in 2005; and son-in-law, Carmine Tortarella, Jr. in 2016.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, Tuesday, June 26th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
Funeral services will be at 10 am, Wednesday, June 27th at the Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in the family plot at Union Cemetery of Hyde Park.
Lucy’s family respectfully requests memorial donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142 (www.stjude.org), or, Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Avenue, Hyde Park, NY 12538 (www.dcspca.org).
