Obituary for George Henry Wheeler

George Henry Wheeler, 74, a longtime resident of the Town of Clinton (formerly of Poughkeepsie) died on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at home with family by his side. Born on February 20, 1943 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late William Albert and Lucia (Weyhe) Wheeler. George graduated from F.D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park in 1960. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1964. George worked in the procurement department at IBM in Poughkeepsie until his retirement in 2007. He was an assistant scout leader in Boy Scout Troop #80 for 8 years. He enjoyed woodcarving, gardening, and fishing. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. On October 8, 1965 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, he married the former Cynthia Mancuso. Mrs. Wheeler survives at home. In addition to his wife, George is survived by son, John A. Wheeler, of Poughkeepsie; son, Peter A. Wheeler, and his wife, Lucienne, of Land O' Lakes, FL; son, Wesley B. Wheeler, of Land O' Lakes, FL; son, Robert A. Wheeler, and his wife, Jessica, of Staatsburg; five grandchildren: Mary Pearson (Tyler), Cameron Wheeler, Teresa Wheeler, Michael Wheeler, and Abigail Wheeler; sister, Helen Wheeler, of Poughkeepsie; sister, Margaret Wheeler-Plass, of Poughkeepsie; and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his parents; son, Joseph Wheeler; brother, William A. Wheeler, Jr.; and two sisters, June Wheeler Roach and Ruth Ann Wheeler-Millard. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Calling hours will be from 5-8pm on Monday, November 6th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. A memorial service will be at 11am on Tuesday, November 7th at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Salt Point. Rev. Theodore Miller officiating. Burial of his ashes will take place privately in the family plot at Crum Elbow Cemetery, Hyde Park.
