Obituary for Ernest G. Raiklin

Ernest G. Raiklin, 80, a resident of Highland for two years and of Grahamsville for 11 years, died on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, due to complications with pneumonia and Parkinson's disease.

Born on November 22, 1937 in Leningrad, Soviet Union, he was the son of Gilya and Zina (Belenkaya) Raiklin. On October 16, 1968 in Moscow, Russia, he married the love of his life, Augusta Tutunikova. Mrs. Raiklin currently survives at home.

Ernest and Augusta immigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States in 1974 with three of their four children. Their youngest was born two years later in New York City. In 1981, Ernest was naturalized and became a citizen of the Unites States.

Ernest worked as a bookkeeper and an accountant in New York City to support his family, while also earning his Master's and then his Doctorate degrees. Ernest and his family moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa where he worked as a Professor of Economics at the University of Northern Iowa until his retirement in 1999. Ernest and Augusta returned to their beloved Catskill mountains and bought a house in Grahamsville, NY. During this period, he wrote magazine articles and books, which were published in both Russian and English on topics related to economics policies around the world.

In addition to his wife, Ernest is survived by daughter, Maria Hoskins, of Hyde Park; daughter, Paula Banuelos, and her husband, David, of El Paso, TX; son, Ben Raiklin, and his wife, Iuliia, of Madison, WI; son, Ivan Raiklin, and his wife, Elena, of Alexandria, VA; seven grandchildren; sister, Meryam Vance, and her husband, Rafael, of Deerfield Beach, FL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial calling hours will be from 11am-2pm on Sunday, January 7th at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park. There will be a reception following the calling hours. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
