Obituary for Edward Gauthier

Edward Gauthier, 69, of Pleasant Valley passed away peacefully on April 6, 2018 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.
Ed will always be remembered for his quick wit, intelligence, likeable personality and unique sense of humor.  Ed loved ice hockey, reading, cooking and music, and had the ability to play any instrument with ease.  Ed was introduced to his future wife, Jo-Anne, through mutual friends and it was instantly love at first sight.  The two were married in Chappaqua, NY on April 29, 1973 and would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this month.  Ed was happiest when surrounded by family and friends, especially around holiday gatherings at home where he loved playing host.
He was born on December 26, 1948 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island to Rosario and Gladys Gauthier who predeceased him.  At the age of five, the family relocated to Mount Vernon, NY.  Ed graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in 1966 and received a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Programming from Fort Lauderdale University in 1970.
Ed spent most of his career in the Information Technology Industry.  He worked as a Systems Programmer for many organizations before joining IBM in 1981.  His career of 30 years in IBM spanned many different roles and allowed him to travel the world.  Ed and his family moved to Boebligen, Germany for two years where he wrote the code to simplify and automate the VSE Operating System’s installation which was still in use when he retired in 2011.  After the year 2000, Ed joined and was the primary contributor to the group that evaluated, promoted, and launched Linux on System z.  He created many of the marketing materials and again traveled the globe promoting the Linux package.  While performing in these various roles, Ed also contributed as a Top Gun Instructor, teaching IBM's sales teams IBM’s latest technologies.  Ed loved working with people and was a willing mentor; his last position with IBM was in the Poughkeepsie Executive Briefing Center.  He closed his career doing what he loved, briefing IBM's clients and IBM teams on IBM's new technologies.
Ed is survived by his adoring family: wife, Jo-Anne Gauthier of Pleasant Valley; his daughter Jeanne Gauthier of Pleasant Valley; his son, James Gauthier and Candice Garcea of Hyde Park; his granddaughter Lyla Gauthier; brothers-in-law and sisters-in law Paul and Nancy Speidell of Bedford Hills, NY, Joseph Lischinsky and Denise Hammond of Hyde Park, NY, John and Nancy Lischinsky of Gardiner, NY, nieces and nephews Andrew and Amy Speidell and Claire and Stephen Lischinsky, his lifelong friends, Patricia and Robert Mirro of Holmes, New York and many friends throughout the world.
The family will be conducting private memorial services.  Ed has opted to be cremated in lieu of a traditional burial for the sole reason that the New York Rangers are unavailable as pallbearers to let him down one last time.  Donations in memory of Ed can be made to the Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
The family wishes to extend its gratitude to the physicians and entire staff of Vassar Brothers Medical Center for their dedication, care, kindness and compassion throughout Ed's treatment.
