Obituary for Edith 'Chickie' Divine

Edith (Chickie) Divine passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 17, 2017 in Guilderland, NY. She was born in Poughkeepsie in 1935, the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Edith Kopser Emery. In 1958, she married Samuel W. Divine, who predeceased her in 2012. Chickie and Sam shared 54 years of marriage and together they parented three children, David Divine, Charles Divine, and Beth Ann Divine, who predeceased them in 1965. The unbearable tragedy of losing a child forged their bond of marriage into a strong relationship that carried them through despite their shared pain. As a friend of the family commented, “Imagine her joy when she got to heaven's gate and there was Sam waiting for her with Beth Ann in his arms.”

Before her children were born, Chickie worked at IBM in Poughkeepsie. Later, she worked at Vassar College in an academic office until the family moved to Haines Falls, where she began her career with the U.S. Postal Service, starting as a part-time temporary clerk, then as an acting postmaster and was eventually installed as Postmaster in Phoenicia. She and Sam moved to a beautiful home that they built on Sacandaga Lake, and she finished her career as Postmaster in Galway. Those years were spent enjoying their boat on the lake, traveling with their RV to NASCAR races, some stays in Florida, and a cross-country drive with Sam and Charlie to attend a family reunion in California. She enjoyed skiing, golf, camping, NASCAR, bowling, cards, reading, and sewing. Chickie loved life, her family, friends, cats and dogs. One of her nieces recently said, “Aunt Chickie was exactly what you want an aunt to be. She was funny and loving and the life of any party. Her last name was Divine, so she drove a car with a vanity plate that said Simply.” And that she was, Simply Divine! Eventually, Sam’s health slowed them down a bit, and they moved to the Town of Glen, near Amsterdam to be closer to hospitals. Chickie remained in their home for a few years after Sam’s death, but eventually found an assisted living location in Albany that met her needs and provided companionship at the same time. She remained there until October when, after a brief hospital stay, it was clear that she was struggling with not only physical problems, but some dementia that became increasingly difficult for her. She entered Our Lady of Mercy Life Center and remained there until her passing.

In addition to her sons, she is also survived by a brother, John Emery of California; a sister, Patricia (Jeremiah) Sheehan of Hyde Park; sisters-in-law, Betty Emery of North Carolina and Dawn (George) Kocsis of Skaneateles, an aunt, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her parents, husband and daughter, she was also predeceased by her brother Joseph Emery, Jr. of North Carolina, sister-in-law Jeanie Emery of California, and her parents-in-law Samuel and Roberta Divine of Kerhonkson.

Her family wishes to thank everyone at Atria Shaker in Albany, who provided a wonderful three years of friendship and caring, and the kind and caring staff at Our Lady of Mercy, and all the doctors, nurses, technicians and caregivers who saw to her needs with love and exceptional care during her last few months.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Memorial calling hours will be from 4 to 7 pm, Friday, April 20th at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Michael Morris at 10 am, Saturday, April 21st at Regina Coeli Church, Hyde Park.

Burial of her ashes will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.

The Divine family respectfully requests memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, Hudson Valley Chapter, 2 Jefferson Plaza – Suite 103, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 (www.alz.org/hudsonvalley), or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 5 Computer Drive West – Suite 100, Albany, NY 12205 (www.LLS.org), or, Ronald McDonald House Charities, RHMC of the Capital Region, Inc., 139 South Lake Ave., Albany, NY 12208 (www.rhmc.org).
