Obituary for Albert James Smith

Albert James Smith, 81, a lifelong area resident, died unexpectedly on Monday, August 6, 2018 at home, with his family by his side.
Born on August 5, 1937 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late Harold and Esther Hawley Smith. He attended Poughkeepsie High School.
Mr. Smith was a carpenter by trade and worked for various construction companies over the years. He spent the last twenty-five years with Losee Construction of Poughkeepsie until he retired in 2002. In his “retirement”, he developed a small business, “Hammer for Hire”, and helped many people with small odd jobs around their homes.
Never far from a cup of coffee and a good conversation, Al enjoyed spending time with his many friends at the Eveready Diner in Hyde Park.
He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Hyde Park, where he taught Pre-k Sunday School for many years. A generation of youngsters benefited from Mr. Al’s love of God… and never-ending supply of fruit snacks.
In his younger years, he was active with the Dutchess Dragons Car Club.
On June 29, 1996 in Kingston, he married the former Tracey Merrihew. Mrs. Smith survives at home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five children, Declan and Rebecca Smith, both at home, Stacy Wilson of Vernon Hill, Virginia, Albert Smith, Jr. of Halifax, Virginia, and Scott Smith of Hyde Park; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joan Bouchard of North Carolina, and Sharron Smith of Hyde Park; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by seven of his siblings, Harold Smith, Anna Bartula, Florence Beyer, Audrey Cables, Fern Wilson, William Smith, and Pearl Ryan.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 pm, Thursday, August 9th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
Funeral services will be at 10 am, Friday, August 10th at the United Methodist Church of Hyde Park on the corner of Rte. 9 & Church Street. Rev. Kregg Gabor will officiate.
Burial will follow in Union Cemetery of Hyde Park.
In lieu of flowers, the Smith family respectfully requests memorial donations to the United Methodist Church of Hyde Park, Memorials & Celebration Fund, 1 Church St., Hyde Park, NY 12538.
